Summary

Mary Lennox was horrid。 Selfish and spoilt, she was sent to stay with her hunchback uncle in Yorkshire。 She hated it。

But when she finds the way into a secret garden and begins to tend to it, a change comes over her and her life。 She meets and befriends a local boy, the talented Dickon, and comes across her sickly cousin Colin who had been kept hidden from her。 Between them, the three children work astonishing magic in themselves and those around them。

The Secret Garden is one of the best-loved stories of all time。

I absolutely love the way this book makes me feel。 The characters develop from spoiled self centered kids to hopeful adoring ones that definitely find a special place in your heart。

The story was very mysterious and attention grabbing。 It was an attainable fantasy or realistic。

This was such a charming story。 A big thank-you to my lovely friend Cherie who gave me this as a beautiful hard copy book that was so stunning that it enticed me to finally read this classic novel (long overdue!)。This book is set in the early 1900s and is a story about healing, friendship, kindness and the magical power of thought。 The book centers around Mary who is orphaned when her parents die when a Cholera epidemic sweeps through India。 Although she is physically orphaned at this point, it This was such a charming story。 A big thank-you to my lovely friend Cherie who gave me this as a beautiful hard copy book that was so stunning that it enticed me to finally read this classic novel (long overdue!)。This book is set in the early 1900s and is a story about healing, friendship, kindness and the magical power of thought。 The book centers around Mary who is orphaned when her parents die when a Cholera epidemic sweeps through India。 Although she is physically orphaned at this point, it is probably fair to say she was orphaned since birth growing up neglected/ignored and thus turning into a very sallow looking and mean acting child。 She goes to live with her Uncle in England and there meets a series of characters that positively influence her and in turn she goes on to positively influence others around her。 The whole story left me with such a sense of contentment and optimism。I would not call this a quick/easy read and for the first 150 pages I had to force myself to read just one more chapter。 In the end I am glad I kept reading as while I was probably not a fan of the writing, the story itself was just magical。Reading ChallengeAussie Readers 2021 Autumn Mini Book Bingo Challenge: Row#4 - Read a book with a cover you loveAussie Readers 2021 May Play On Words Challenge: You MAY go to the 。。。。。 (read a book that has a word in the title that completes the sentence) 。。。more

One of the best children book that I have read, truly masterpiece。 Actually I was inspired unconsciously to read the book。 Almost like Mr。 Craven, I don’t know how, but after 12 years I somehow one day just got the inspiration to read it。 Truly it is magical。 The plot was amazing with diverse characters and backgrounds。 The book is educating the kids to learn take care of something they like, respect people and never give up。 Very good children book!

So glad I reread this 50+ years later! Definitely still precious to me! I had neglected to remember the emphasis on the "Magic" in the garden! I love that! While there was a bit of religiosity hinted at, it was very subtle and mixed in with other explanations so my atheistic 'secular humanist' self was not offended! LOL 😳🤗While this is definitely a product of the times and probably contains material many of us (if not most) would find at least a bit offensive now, I believe it more than stands u So glad I reread this 50+ years later! feel as though im a lil late to this party, as i knew next to nothing about this story before i read it except maybe the theme / genre it fits into。 however, this book came to me at the most perfect time in my life。 so beautifully written & so wonderfully simple, some parts seemed to be written as a love letter to the outdoors。 i did read this entire book outside in my backyard, which only added to the Magic。

Fantastic descriptions but the cousin dynamic really threw twelve-year-old me for a loop。

I'm glad to have finally read this phenomenal children's classic。 It doesn't get 5 stars because the prose bothered me a lot, so I wouldn't have been able to finish it if it wasn't an audiobook。 Still, the story was one of the sweetest tales I've ever had the pleasure to experience。 I'm glad to have finally read this phenomenal children's classic。 It doesn't get 5 stars because the prose bothered me a lot, so I wouldn't have been able to finish it if it wasn't an audiobook。 Still, the story was one of the sweetest tales I've ever had the pleasure to experience。 。。。more

I think this is a really good book。 It is for everyone。 I love how Mary helps Colin really turn around。 At first he is so grumpy and always wants his way。 It is very well written and a very good Classic。 Their are so many great things to enjoy in this book。 The way that the author writes about the wind is so great。 Good for kids 6 and up

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Borderline fantasy, if only through the magic fostered by the characters (a magic they would swear is accessible to the reader as well)。 So good。 My favorite excerpts from this were about the need for a positive mindset, and how believing that you can is already half the battle in achieving what you want, even (and perhaps especially) if that thing is as abstract as being happy。

Dani Gobbo (Current Chapter)

I won't go in depth about the racism and ableism in the book, but I don't think the book gets a "pass" just because it's old, and those things definitely influenced my (non-)enjoyment of the book。 I overall just felt the story didn't have a purpose, there's really no conflict or something they are trying to achieve, and that's okay but for me it was just incredibly boring! I like the idea of the garden, but it felt repetitive for me, and most characters were bland。I still want to watch the movie I won't go in depth about the racism and ableism in the book, but I don't think the book gets a "pass" just because it's old, and those things definitely influenced my (non-)enjoyment of the book。 I overall just felt the story didn't have a purpose, there's really no conflict or something they are trying to achieve, and that's okay but for me it was just incredibly boring! Thank you Katie, for finally poking me into reading this one。 I wasn't really sure how I felt while reading this, and despite a fair amount of things that have aged EXTREMELY poorly (a fair amount of racism and ableism early on) it's a decently quick and fun read。 The accents are difficult to parse for me, which might be the biggest factor to not enjoying it a ton and, because it is a classic, I feel like there's a lot of rose coloured glasses people have for it。 It's not bad, I'll say that, but Thank you Katie, for finally poking me into reading this one。 I wasn't really sure how I felt while reading this, and despite a fair amount of things that have aged EXTREMELY poorly (a fair amount of racism and ableism early on) it's a decently quick and fun read。 The accents are difficult to parse for me, which might be the biggest factor to not enjoying it a ton and, because it is a classic, I feel like there's a lot of rose coloured glasses people have for it。 It's not bad, I'll say that, but it's a difficult read nowadays and definitely a product of the time。 I've said this about other classics, but there's something even moreso about this。 I enjoyed it for what it was, but I wouldn't say it's my favourite I've read on this journey, unfortunately。 。。。more
